A crown, sometimes commonly called a dental cap, is a type of dental restoration which can be used to fix teeth which have broken, have extensive tooth decay, or already contain a very large filling.
If you have had root canal treatment on a tooth, then a crown is strongly recommended to help protect the tooth and allow you to bite and chew as normal.
Aesthetic crowns are made fully of ceramic and carefully planned and matched to your own natural teeth.
Crowns are placed in a two appointment process:
The first appointment, your tooth is prepared for the crown and a scan or mould is taken of the tooth.
This is then sent to a dental laboratory where a your crown is made to fit your tooth and to match the neighbouring teeth.
At the second appointment, your crown is fitted securely over your tooth.
